CHAPTER TWELVE

TRACE

The early morning sun beat down on me and woke me from the hardest sleep I'd ever had. Peeling my eyes open, I tried to process why the hell I was on the ledge by my nest.

The dragon.

I'd been out searching for the coyote that had been terrorizing my chickens when I'd spotted him in the distance, landing on my ledge. The initial shock of seeing an actual dragon shift into a man wore off quickly when I spotted Trixie protecting what was ours.

She was such a good chicken.

My eyes zeroed in on the man falling from the ledge, and I had every intention of saving him, but then he shifted into the massive dragon, but not before I caught a glimpse of his face.

I probably should have known they were shifters too, but it wasn't like I could smell them. I could see them, though, and he was a threat.

If they had come for my territory, they had another thing coming.

With no other thought than protecting what was mine, I attacked as he went for my chicken again. Two winged beasts fighting in the sky, only it was short-lived because, the next thing I knew, I was swallowing a beak full of pond water, and he squeezed until it was lights out.

I jumped to my feet and shook out my feathers, folding them back against my body before shifting. "Trixie?" My voice was scratchy as hell, and I coughed, trying to clear it of gunk.

Checking inside my nest, I didn't see her anywhere. Usually she was right in the center of the grass and straw I had fashioned into a bed for when I spent some nights sleeping there.

Lifting the edge of the nest, I sighed in relief that they hadn't taken my stash of feathers. I lost one every time I shifted and made sure to collect them so they didn't fall into the wrong hands.

Which reminded me; I needed to go grab my clothes and the feather from where I shifted behind Rowdy Roosters. It hadn't been ideal, but after wanting to snap Devon's neck and Olivia not trusting me enough to come outside alone, I'd needed to fly.

It shouldn't have bothered me. She didn't know me, nor did I know her. But my griffin was beside himself about it, and I'd given in.

Going to the edge of the cliff, I looked out over my property. One of the reasons I'd chosen this spot to put my nest was because I could see all the way to my house.

"Trixie!" I bellowed, cupping my hands to my mouth.

A glint of something gold caught my eye, and I damn near tripped over my own feet getting to it. Practically covered in dirt was the gold collar with Trixie's name on it.

I scooped it up with a shaking hand. Not because I was sad, but because I was angrier than I'd ever been.

The fucker took my chicken.
